Do
you want to regain part of your Italian heritage or get to know
it better? Are you planning to travel to Italy? Want to improve
your communication skills with Italian-Americans for business or
professional reasons?
The Italian American
Cultural Society offers Italian language classes for people of
all ages and levels of proficiency throughout the tri-county
area.
18 – 20 classes are
offered annually consisting of five levels of Italian. Beginning
and intermediate placement exams are available for those
students who enroll beyond the first year. Three levels and
sometimes four levels are available to children 6–12 years old.
These classes are taught on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. - noon.
Italian
is offered for credit to high school students if their school
principals approve their enrollment. Departmental final exams
are given to those students who take Italian classes for credit.
Many Italian American
business people in the community are proud of their heritage and
donate funds for scholarships. These scholarships are available
to all students in grades 7-12.
Integrated CD’s,
produced at the Center, are used in all first year adult
classes. A “diploma di merito” is awarded to the better students
each year and a “certificato di frequenza” is given to those who
request it. “Gift packages of materials” are available for those
students who are studying Italian because they want to visit
Italy. The large envelope includes information about Italy, a
map, and an audiocassette of useful and necessary expressions
for the traveler.
Seven staff members
teach 350-450 children, adults, seniors, and high school
students annually. Teacher preparation and execution are
continuously monitored. New teachers at the Center must take a
training program in methodology consisting of private lessons
before and during their first semester of instruction to insure
and maintain program excellence. Our students are given
personalized attention by the Director and staff. Counseling and
materials on how to study and learn a second language are
available to them. The Director and staff always welcome
student’s input and are available for any learning problems they
may have.

ITALIAN FOR CREDIT OFFERED TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT CENTER
Since 1980, and even before, the
Italian American Cultural and Community Center has offered
Italian classes for all ages of students – elementary through
adults. The program includes seven teachers and approximately
400 students a year. It is one of the largest Italian night
school programs in the country. A rather distinctive part of
the program are the high school completion credit courses that
offer credit through the individual student’s own school
system. Two of the Italian teachers at IACS are state-certified
foreign language specialists. The course of study and final
exams are available to the principal or counselors upon
request. The final grades are mailed to the student’s counselor
one week after the end of the school year.
The course is offered from 7:00 to
9:30 p.m. once a week, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, from
September to May. Please note: In order to receive one
semester of high school credit, the students must attend one
year of night school at the Center once a week.
There will be a tuition charge of $140 per semester for children
and $160 per semester for adults plus the cost
of textbook and other materials.
